Explore Obstetrics & Gynecology Mammography
What Is Mammography?
Mammography uses a low-dose X-ray machine to take images of breasts and breast tissue that can help detect and identify any abnormal growths or changes. These images are used to help doctors diagnose breast cancer, cysts, and other possible conditions. A mammogram is the most effective tool that can diagnose breast cancer in the early stages when it is easier to treat. At UConn Health’s Beekley Imaging Center, we offer the latest technologies to detect cancer, including all-digital 3D mammography and a computer-aided detection system. Our friendly and experienced team of radiology and gynecology experts work together to give you the most accurate results. You can even get live reads and same-day results upon request.
What to Expect
We strive to provide our patients with a pleasant and comfortable experience. We designed our center as a spa-like environment equipped with relaxing waiting areas, private changing rooms, and warm gowns. While you wait, you can have coffee, tea, and snacks.
During your appointment, your breasts will be compressed between two firm surfaces to spread out the breast tissue. The machine captures black-and-white images, which are analyzed for signs of cancer or other abnormalities. A standard mammogram creates two-dimensional images, while the newer, 3D mammogram (breast tomosynthesis) captures three-dimensional images of the breast tissue.
