Pulmonary Vascular Disease Care

What Is Pulmonary Hypertension?

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common and potentially life-threatening lung disorder. It occurs when the blood vessels in the lungs become stiff and less flexible, causing an increase in pressure. Increased pressure makes it more difficult for the heart to pump vital blood and oxygen to the lungs.

Possible Causes

While there are many theories about the development of pulmonary hypertension, sometimes the exact cause cannot be determined. This is known as “idiopathic” pulmonary hypertension.

However, pulmonary hypertension can develop as a result of many other conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Other systemic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma
  • Cirrhosis
  • HIV disease
  • Blood clots/pulmonary embolism

Symptoms

The intensity and character of pulmonary hypertension symptoms can vary from dramatic to non-specific. Here are the most common symptoms of pulmonary hypertension:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue

Diagnosis

Pulmonary hypertension is a complex disorder that requires a comprehensive approach to establish the correct diagnosis. We may perform a combination of the following tests to diagnose pulmonary hypertension and determine its cause:

  • Blood tests
  • Chest X-ray
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Echocardiogram
  • Right heart catheterization
  • Exercise stress tests
  • Chest computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Cardiac CT scan
  • Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Lung function tests
  • Sleep study
  • Ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) scan

Only a specialist can accurately diagnose pulmonary hypertension. A misdiagnosis, frequently made by non-experts, can lead to mistakes and delays in care.
