Medical Genetics at UConn Health

UConn Health’s Division of Medical Genetics provides comprehensive evaluations and the most up-to-date information about the cause, heritability, and management of genetic conditions. Our genetics providers will help you understand how complex genetic information can impact you and your family, enabling you to make the most informed decisions related to your health care.

We provide access to general genetics consultation services, prenatal genetic counseling, hereditary cancer testing, and the state- and federal-funded program MotherToBaby CT.

Before your appointment, you may be asked to complete a family history form. During the consultation, we will review your detailed medical and family history, including any concerns you may have. If appropriate, we will review genetic testing options with you. Genetic testing is optional and is not always necessary or recommended.

If you elect to pursue genetic testing a cheek swab or blood sample may be required. In most cases, these samples can be obtained in the office on the day of your appointment. When the test results are ready, we will schedule a time to review the results with you in detail.

Comprehensive Genetic Services

Our Medical Genetics team is comprised of board-certified geneticists and genetic counselors who are highly specialized in their field of interest, which include general genetics, prenatal genetics, and cancer genetics. Together we ensure you will meet with the expert who can best assist you with your specific genetic concern. A unique aspect of our general genetics team is that we see patients of all ages, both children and adults.

Personalized & Compassionate Care

We pride ourselves on our patient-centered approach. Our genetics providers are highly empathetic professionals who prioritize the individual needs of our patients and families. We understand that genetic testing is a personal decision. Therefore, we will always have a detailed conversation with you prior to ordering genetic testing. We will guide and support you during your genetic testing journey by facilitating understanding of how genetic testing works and how the results might affect you and your family. We aim to help you make the decision that is best for you. In addition, we interpret genetic test results based on your personal and family history.

We Offer Quick Access to Our Experts
