The differences lie within the depth, scope, and length of formal education associated with the two titles.
Registered dietitians are required to complete a graduate degree in nutrition science granted by a USDE-accredited institution, complete 1,200 supervised practice hours through an internship, pass a national comprehensive registration exam, and complete ongoing education over the course of their careers.
In contrast, nutritionists can be any individual who offers general nutrition advice. Unlike registered dietitians, the title “nutritionist” is not regulated or legally protected. This means that anyone can claim to be a nutritionist without meeting specific educational or professional criteria. It is important to note that while all registered dietitians are nutritionists, not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. If you require assistance in managing a medical condition through appropriate dietary choices, it is advisable to seek the expertise of a registered dietitian. They can help develop a personalized diet plan tailored to your specific goals and health needs.
